Horse and Stable Information

Are you planning to place any horses at your property or to build a NEW Horse Stable ?

Before you place any horses at your property...make sure to make an appointment with the Health Inspector to discuss your plans and get the stable properly permitted. All horse stables must be licensed by the Board of Health. The licensing process can be long, taking more than a month in most cases.

We highly recommend that you visit with other pertinent divisions (i.e Building Division) at 200 Main Street around the same time you apply to the Health Division to make sure your horse stable will be permitted in the zone you wish to be in and to determine the maximum number of horses allowed there.

A complete application and a neatly drawn sketch of the proposed stable (showing locations of structures, property lines, any private wells, proposed manure storage areas, etc) must be submitted and reviewed with the Health Inspector before you any horses can be placed onto your property. Additionally if any variances are needed, the Board of Health must review and approve the variance at a regularly scheduled meeting before your license will be issued. These meetings take place once per month, so plan accordingly.
