Great Streets Downtown Hyannis:
A Walkable Heart for Cape Cod
The Great Streets Downtown Hyannis final plan was published on May 17th, 2023 -
The Great Streets Hyannis project re-envisions how Main Street Hyannis and the surrounding streets/intersections are designed and function by returning to two-way travel in the downtown.
The final plan for the project includes concepts for Main Street, key intersections including ‘Six Points’, a proposed bicycle network, and circulation changes throughout downtown Hyannis. This study is informed by previous planning efforts and benefits from the input of Town staff along with feedback from local residents and merchants received through an iterative and multi-pronged community-input process. The end result of this process is buildable street designs concepts that respond to the overall project goals of addressing congestion, placing more of an emphasis on pedestrians, enhancing the public realm through placemaking in support of economic development, employing traffic calming measures to enhance safety, and encouraging multi-modal transportation.
The Town of Barnstable’s Planning & Development and Public Works Departments partnered with walkability expert Jeff Speck and Stantec Consulting Services to complete this project. Funding was provided through Development of Regional Impact (DRI) Mitigation funds administered through the Cape Cod Commission.
This project primarily focuses on the areas including Hyannis Main Street, North Street, South Street, and "Six Points" (intersection of South, Ocean & Old Colony)
